Here are three soundscapes I created. My aim was not to create a composition tied to any particular event but to create conceptual backgrounds that could be used in various imagined worlds.
The image I had for The Machine was something like the foundry at the end of Terminator 1+2. All of the sounds are made from Foley such as printers, wrenches and angle grinders. They were then manipulated using time stretching, delays, reverbs, EQ's and distortions on Pro Tools.
The idea behind the world of Space was inspired by Sci-fi such as Flash Gordon, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Gravity. Particularly the moments of pandemonium. As I have never been to outer space, I felt that I had more creative license to include the feeling of going through something like a black hole. The main sounds used to create this soundscape were an oscillator, an LFO, delay and a heavy dose of panning. Pitch shifting was also used to try and mimic the doppler effect of an imagined asteroid. The aim here was to try and emulate a 3d sound using stereo mixing.
For the soundscape Underwater, I wanted to go slightly beyond a literal definition of being under water and write something that included the spirit or a dreamlike interpretation of being underwater. For me, sound design is not just about making a realistic interpretation, but the sounds should include an interpretation of the soul of the object. Some of the sounds included emptying a bottle of water into the sink, dunking my head into a bath full of Badedas, and artificially slowing down my squeaky gate.
White Noise Technical Demonstration
This is a college project where we were asked to sync and design sounds to this video. The 'catch' was that we were only allowed to use white noise. We were allowed to use different effects, but the underlying audio had to be white noise. This was a fun project because it really felt like I was engaged with developing raw audio. It made me realise that, in theory, any sound can be made using white noise. Having a good understanding of how synthesizers work, helped me understand how sounds are made and manipulated.
